Franklin’s Aphorisms

An aphorism is defined as a pithy observation that contains a general truth. "Poor Richard's Almanac", by Ben Franklin, includes many examples of aphorisms.
"Write injuries in dust, benefits in marble" is one example of an aphorism. This aphorism is telling you to leave your mistakes and regrets behind, and to focus on the important things. I think Franklin's virtue of Industry helps describe this aphorism because it advises you to not waste any time looking at your unnecessary actions, but always look toward the useful things in your life.
"No gains without pains" is another example of an aphorism. This aphorism advises you to work hard, even if it means encountering a few obstacles along the way. Franklin's virtue of Resolution helps explain this aphorism because it's saying to accomplish your goals without failure by overcoming the obstacles along the way.
"God helps them that helps themselves" is also an example of an aphorism from "Poor Richard's Almanac". This aphorism is telling you to act wisely and put yourself first, as God puts you first. God guides you when you act in the right way. Franklin's virtue of Humility helps explain this aphorism because it advises you to act wisely, as Jesus and Socrates did. God helped them along the way as he does the wise ones.
Aphorisms are principles of general truth that guide you through life, as did each of Franklin’s thirteen virtues.

  1. I recommend my book, How to Write Aphorisms, soon to be released from Amazon. I realize it's a radical concept, but if the result is better aphorisms, so much the better. The method is tailored to aphorisms of any length, using a categorical approach. See my Amazon author profile at: http://www.amazon.com/author/nathancoppedge
